National Audit Office of Tanzania gets new Controller and Auditor General

On 3 November 2019, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, appointed Mr. Charles Edward Kichere as the new Controller and Auditor General (CAG) of the National Audit of Tanzania (NAOT). The new CAG, who was the former boss of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), received a warm welcome from the NAOT employees both in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.

Announcing the appointment in Dar es Salaam, the Chief Secretary John Kijazi said that Mr. Kichere replaces Professor Mussa Assad whose five-year term of office ended on 4 November 2019. Before his new appointment, Mr. Kichere was working as the Njombe Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) in Southern Tanzania. He was sworn in on 4 November 2019 in Dar es Salaam.

Immediately after swearing-in ceremony, Mr. Kichere addressed some of the NAOT top management and staff at the office in Dar es Salaam. In his address, the new CAG thanked the staff for receiving him and he urged them to work hard, adhere to ethics and avoid corruption. He also asked employees to avoid misuse of public funds and avoid temptations in carrying out their activities.

He further noted that avoiding mismanagement of public funding will allow proper use of the Government money for the development of the country such as building hospitals.

“Auditors need to do much better in auditing activities particularly in the Local Government, supervision must be strengthened. There is high corruption and misuse of Government money; projects have to be well supervised and monitored so that they can be nicely implemented” the new CAG said.

“I urge you to submit suggestions to me which will help the government. I am ready to work with you, let us cooperate, exchange our ideas. Everybody has something to contribute in carrying out activities and fulfilling responsibilities within the deadline as we are preparing the report for the last financial year” he said.
