AFROSAI-E region mourns the loss of Mr Kimi Makwetu

We are deeply saddened by the news that the outgoing Auditor General of South Africa, Mr Thembekile Kimi Makwetu, passed away on 11 November 2020. The tragic news comes two weeks before his term as Auditor General was set to conclude.

Mr Makwetu, who was recently appointed to the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee, leaves behind a tremendous legacy, having fought tirelessly to strengthen good governance in South Africa and strengthening the role of SAIs globally. During an address by the President of South Africa on 11 November, President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to Mr Makwetu saying that “during his time as auditor-general, Mr Makwetu served this country with dedication, distinction and with great integrity”.

Mr Makwetu had great passion for our region, and his excellent, inspirational leadership will be greatly missed. As AFROSAI-E, we join the staff of the Auditor General of South Africa and the Makwetu family in mourning his death.
