AFROSAI-E is working with member SAIs to implement two coordinated SDG audits annually. Having delivered audits on four areas, we have observed a challenge in finding an analytical method to connect the findings in a highly logical way and to connect the issues around SDG implementation.

Issue analysis is one method for identifying underlying reasons and organising the thought process around the identified challenges. Identifying root causes enables auditors to determine the fundamental problems/issues, resulting in more meaningful findings and recommendations.

This webinar aims to simplify the complexities surrounding issue analysis and provide auditors with a useful tool to support their audit engagements.

About the guest speaker:

Mr John Affleck was a Performance Audit Principal in the Office of the Auditor General of Canada from 2001 until his retirement in 2017. He was responsible for 28 federal entities, two thematic portfolios (Oversight and Science and Technology), and the internal specialist for Internal Audit.

Since his retirement, he has worked as an independent consultant, including an Associate for the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation (CAAF). In this capacity, he designs and delivers many of the Foundation’s performance audit training programmes, including Root Cause Analysis.

Mr Affleck received a Master of Arts (Public Administration) and a Bachelor of Science (Honors, Geology) from Carleton University. He also holds a diploma in adult education from St. Francis Xavier University and is a graduate of Canada’s Advanced Leadership Program at the Canada School of Public Service.
