Extractive Industries Workshop – Role of SAIs to ensure better resource governance

4 July 2024

< 1 minute

This year, we are partnering with the Office of the Auditor General of Norway and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) to deliver our annual Extractive Industries Workshop in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Mining and oil companies are being urged to improve the communities they operate in. Environmental degradation has been a significant concern for activists and community leaders. It’s crucial for governments to create policies that protect these communities from exploitation and ensure they benefit from local resources. In light of this, our 2024 Extractive Industries Workshop is focusing on how Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) can ensure better resource governance for the maximum benefit of citizens. We are exploring topics around: Sustainability Reporting: Auditors increasingly focus on verifying sustainability reports in extractive industries to ensure accurate disclosure of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Resource Reserves Evaluation: Auditors scrutinise the estimation and disclosure of mineral or oil/gas reserves to ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant reporting standards. Anti-corruption Measures: Auditors evaluate anti-corruption controls in the extractive sector to prevent bribery, fraud, and other unethical practices. Digitalisation and cybersecurity: Auditors focus on cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive data, intellectual property, and operational systems from cyber threats and breaches. A huge thank you to SAI Tanzania for hosting the workshop!
