To boost leadership excellence, the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Eritrea, in partnership with AFROSAI-E, launched the SAI-level Management Development Programme (MDP) in 2022. This initiative is designed to equip senior leaders and managers with the tools they need to inspire, influence, and drive their teams to new heights in the SAI environment.

“The insights I gained will transform how I manage and lead my organisation.” – MDP participant

The MDP is focused on:

  • Sharpening leadership and management skills.
  • Preparing managers to tackle challenges head-on, both individually and within teams.
  • Elevating current performance to pave the way for future leadership roles.
  • Spotting and nurturing leadership talent to spearhead impactful organisational growth.

The programme also accelerates the implementation of INTOSAI principles and ISSAIs and fuels the development of essential audit guidelines, manuals, and other vital tools for advancing organisational development.

“As a leader, I’m committed to applying what I’ve learned to inspire and motivate my team to reach new goals.” – MDP participant

Module 3 workshop

Since its launch, the MDP has hosted two successful workshops in 2022 and 2023, with the third edition from 19 to 23 August 2024 at the Asmara Palace Hotel in Eritrea. This latest workshop brought together 30 senior and operational managers to discuss critical leadership topics and assess the progress of seven MDP projects currently in various stages of completion. Top agenda items included:

  • Mastering communication, performance management, integrity, and ethics.
  • Equipping participants with practical tools from the Institutional Capacity Building Framework (ICBF) to track and boost organisational and individual performance.
  • Emphasising relational leadership, integrity, and the significant impact of the new ISSAI 140 on managerial roles.

Participants also had the opportunity to share their experiences, best practices, and lessons learned from implementing their MDP projects. The seven MDP projects are:

  1. Development of the new OAG strategy 2024-2028 (completed and published).
  2. Development and implementation of audit strategy (reviewing phase).
  3. Communication and stakeholder engagement strategy (approval phase).
  4. Review of human resources strategy and policies (drafting phase).
  5. ICT and IS strategy – A-SEAT project has already started (drafting phase).
  6. Governance and accountability framework (drafting phase).
  7. Development of quality management framework (drafting phase).

“Sessions on value-based leadership, integrity, and performance management were game-changers for me.” – MDP participant
