AFROSAI‑E convened its 2026 Strategic Management Workshop in Pretoria from 31 August to 4 September under the theme “Driving Institutional Excellence Through Results.” The workshop emphasised that strategic management is not a one‑off exercise but an ongoing institutional discipline that strengthens the relevance, effectiveness, and efficiency of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs).

Aligned with the INTOSAI P‑12 principle of performance monitoring, reporting, and decision‑making, the workshop highlighted the importance of continuously aligning capacities, processes, results, and impact with mandates and evolving operating contexts. The workshop presented strategic management as a dynamic process that enables SAIs to embed accountability, transparency, and resilience into their operations.

Through interactive sessions, participants were capacitated to align their strategic documents and operational realities. This ensures that every audit, reform, and engagement contributes directly to institutional excellence and public value. The workshop also reinforced the importance of performance monitoring, where outcomes are measured not only by activities completed but also by stakeholder impact and governance improvements.

Participants further appreciated how individual and departmental contributions are critical to strengthening excellence and resilience within their respective SAIs. By embedding these contributions into reporting and decision‑making processes, SAIs reinforce accountability and good governance, while demonstrating credibility and value.

The workshop concluded that effective strategic management requires stakeholder engagement, continuous learning, and evidence‑based decision‑making. By cultivating these practices, SAIs enhance their institutional performance and reinforce public trust in their role as independent auditors of the public sector.
