The National Audit Office (NAO) of The Gambia has taken another significant step towards strengthening accountability and transparency in the management of donor-funded resources through a Quality Management (QM) Review Workshop held from 22–26 June 2026.

The five-day workshop brought together staff from the NAO’s Quality Management, Performance Audit and Information Systems (IS) Audit Units. Facilitated by the AFROSAI-E Technical Team with support from the World Bank and the Global Fund, the workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the NAO’s capacity to deliver high-quality audits of donor-funded projects.  

The training focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of quality management principles and equipping them with practical skills to conduct audits in accordance with the International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAIs). Through a combination of technical presentations, practical exercises and collaborative discussions, participants enhanced their ability to improve audit quality, promote consistency across audit engagements and reinforce accountability in the use of public and donor resources.

The workshop also highlighted the growing importance of strong quality management systems in delivering credible, timely and reliable audit reports. As development financing increasingly involves multiple funding partners, SAIs play a critical role in providing assurance that public resources are managed effectively and transparently.

With vital support from the Global Fund, the NAO is strengthening its institutional capacity to audit donor-funded projects more effectively. The technical assistance provided by AFROSAI-E combines international best practices with practical implementation support, enabling the Office to align its work with globally recognised auditing standards while responding to the complexities of multi-donor programmes.

By investing in stronger quality management systems and professional audit practices, the National Audit Office is positioning itself as a trusted guardian of public resources. The initiative reinforces confidence among development partners, government institutions and citizens by ensuring that donor-funded programmes are subject to independent, high-quality oversight.

Ultimately, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment by the NAO, AFROSAI-E, the World Bank and the Global Fund to strengthen public sector accountability and good governance. Through enhanced audit quality and adherence to international standards, The Gambia is better positioned to ensure that donor investments deliver lasting value and sustainable development outcomes for its people.
